Discounting the Positive
This goes a step beyond mental filtering. Instead of simply ignoring positive experiences, you actively explain them away according to your core beliefs.
Examples:
- You receive a genuine compliment and think: "They're just being polite." (Core Belief: Nobody likes me).
- You get promoted and think: "They had no one else to choose." (Core Belief: Nobody wants me).
- You pass an exam and think: "It must have been easy this year." (Core Belief: I'm not good enough).
Every positive experience gets neutralised, while every negative experience is taken at face value. Over time, this creates a deeply skewed perception of yourself and your life.
